You can work out the likely costs. Because our designers have to undertake a substantial amount of work to prepare the designs, we ask that half the fee is paid before we start work and half once you have approved the design and cover.

This is what is included in the estimate: Cost estimating

Book design & typesetting

Life is too short for a writer to absorb the skills of a typographer. Your word processor is certainly not good enough to provide the material.
The designer will take your mock up (if you have one), book brief, cover design brief, text files and perhaps some illustrations to produce some ideas.  You will normally receive a copy of the title page, a new chapter page and a standard page, together with a cover rough.
Once the contract is agreed, and the final part of the fee paid, the digital files are prepared for our POD printer.

Cover design:

The cover is more than just the wrapping that holds the pages together. The cover is one way to capture the attention of potential readers on a bookshelf.
A well-designed, informative cover is a good investment even if your work does not have to compete for attention on the shelves of a bookshop.
You will need to provide a brief and you could look at some examples of the different styles of cover.
The designer will send some roughs and you will probably have a few phone conversations before the designs are finalised.

Hardbacks are good for academic books and clothbound copies also require a dust jacket. If your book is to be sold by subscription, by mail order or distributed as part of a course or promotion, you might not need to invest in a cover design - but surely your work deserves it!

ISBN registration:

We obtain an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) for your book.
If you plan to distribute your work privately, rather than sell it through bookstores, you do not need an ISBN. But it is the basis of all bibliographic search systems, so it is a 'must have' for all books destined for our POD service.

Bar code generation:

All shops and point of sale systems require a bar code if you want your book to enter the retail chain.
We generate the number and the artwork for your cover. Your ISBN is converted into an internationally accepted barcode, using the Bookland European Article Numbering (EAN) prefix, 978 + ISBN.
WritersPrintshop holds blocks of numbers and a log book and can offer a speedy, low-cost registration. You can also register in your own right if you plan to publish lots of titles.

Registrations:

If you have opted for Self-publishing (not Private Publishing) we register your book with the bibliographic authorities, deposit the copyright copies with the British Library. This is known as legal deposit. If material is published in the UK, there is a legal requirement to supply 6 copies of your work to the copyright libraries.
There is no maximum or minimum and you can order more for yourself at any time.
We help you register your work with the Public Lending Right body, if appropriate.

Digital set-up and file storage for POD:

This is the cost connected with creating the files so that your book can be printed on demand.
There is then an annual fee payable to keep the title in our catalogue.
The files pass through a process known as 'pre-flighting' to make sure they will run as the designer intended on the printing press.

Copies of your book

Copies are sent by us to the legal deposit libraries
You can order copies of your book once it is published.

Creating a publisher's account

The quote for the service also includes the cost of collecting your remuneration for copies sold and remitting it on to you.
We deal with issues of damaged or returned books in accordance with our contract with you.

Because each person is unique we do not offer a single 'package'. However, our system is simple and transparent. We can very quickly work out the costs for the precise service you need.
