How might ebooks impact the reader and writer.

The Readers perspective

There are many low or no-cost ebooks.
You can find many samples and extracts, so you can experiment with new writers and genres.
You can carry an assortment of books to suit your reading mood and environment.
You can get the machine to read and play music to you
Screens can adapt to lighting levels and eyesight.
For non-fiction works, the search and note taking facilities enhance what you can do.

Will the Kindle change reading habits? Many users report that it does affect what, here and when they read.

Writers

The costs of entry are lower for publishers and self-publishers.
Online shopping for books means that readers are already used to internet shopping.
The lower costs make the espace a place for experimentation: So why not try some samplers or short stories. Who says we can’t sell a SciFi, RomCom, detective thriller short story.
Espace offers opportunities for marketing: What’s wrong with publishing the character sketches and giving them away?
Think about the future.  Not everybody speaks English and machine translation might give all writers access to the global market within a decade.

A bright, creative future?

Ebooks could be the start of creative revolution for writers. Let’s not swamp the reader with bad work.

BUT

Reading time is limited – so the market size is limited.

Let’s not devalue the ebook by flooding the market with bad writing.
Just because access is now effectively open:
You still need editors who can advise you about the structure.
You still need all of the advice you have been getting at Winchester on style and characters.

When is this the ebook revolution going to happen?

In 2010, esales by value it is still less than 10% even in the US. But some recent releases have sold as many eversions as print versions.

The growth will be exponential because newsprint and distribution is resource-intensive while eprintng and distribution is resource-lite. Print and transport are increasing in cost at a rate that is well ahead of inflation. (Paper rose about 20% in price during 2010)

If you couple the spread of reading devices (ebooks, tablet and smart phones) to the lower supply costs for eproducts and you have the conditions for a very rapid switch especially if there is an explosion of creativity. 2012 could be the year when epublication took off.
