Masterclasses at the 2005 London Book Fair
WritersServices has previously reported on the 2003 and 2004 Masterclasses at the London Book Fair, set up with English PEN. This year Rose Tremain, Barbara Trapido, Graham Swift, Bernard Cornwell, Philippa Gregory, Daisy Goodwin and Clare Morrall will all be involved in sessions at the fourth London Book Fair Masterclass Series, developed in conjunction with English PEN. The events will take place on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th March and will feature top writers from the world of fiction, poetry and publishing. The programme will run as follows: How to get publishedSaturday 12th March from 10.00am – 1.00pm Booker shortlisted author, Clare Morrall; literary agent, Jonny Geller from Curtis Brown; Alexandra Pringle, Editor in Chief of Bloomsbury and Becky Swift, founding Director of the Literary Consultancy will advise how to make it from the slush-pile to the bestseller lists. The session will be chaired by John Walsh, Deputy Editor of the Independent, longstanding arts journalist and author. The Daily Mail Book Club Fiction MasterclassSaturday 12th March from 2.00pm – 5.00pm Launched in September, the Daily Mail Book Club immediately attracted tens of thousands of readers and propelled the titles chosen into the bestseller lists. With one book featured each month, October’s choice was Frankie and Stankie by Barbara Trapido and January’s title will be The Colour by Rose Tremain. Both authors will appear at the London Book Fair Masterclasses for the first time to talk about their own writing careers and offer advice and guidance alongside Booker prize-winning author of Last Orders and Wasteland, Graham Swift. The event will be chaired by John Cook, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of East Anglia. How to Write Historical FictionSunday 13th March from 2.30 – 5.30pm Learn how to write bestselling historical fiction from the King and Queen of the Genre. International bestsellers, Bernard Cornwell – author of the Sharpe series - and Philippa Gregory – author of Tudor bestsellers, The Other Boleyn Girl and The Virgin’s Lover will discuss research and plotting major historical novels. How to Write Popular PoetrySunday 13th March from 1.30 – 4.30pm Chaired by Daisy Goodwin, editor of The Nation’s Favourite… bestselling anthologies, the session will feature Christoper Reid, former Poetry Editor of Faber & Faber and acclaimed poet, Sophie Hannah, one of our most popular younger generation poets and experienced workshop leader, and Fleur Adcock, one of the nation’s most highly esteemed poets.
